Sun Dance

Chaos thanks the supporters of The Green Cup!  We have several and I’ll note them all before weekend’s end.  For now, here are a couple.  Please support those who support us.

Prokicker is the official footbag or The Green Cup.

Lagunitas provides some of the finest brew in the world for us to turn into cash or consume at our discretion smile.

The weather report isn’t pretty.  Perfect for visibiity but difficult to stay warm in.  Everyone do a sun dance for this afternoon and Monday and we should be alright.

Day One at the 6th edition of The Green Cup

A small sport that plays big in one of the biggest little cities in the world.  We’ve got a van and a driver to get the East Bay folks to the city tonight.  The party starts at Zeitgeist and continues tomorrow in what we hope to be a warmer Oaktown day.

We have a record number of players - 30 open singles and 21 open teams in the net division.  We are also hosting many freestylers although I heard, not confirmed, most are here to shred and 6 are competing.  Of course, one of the competitors is David Clavens so the show quality is guaranteed.

We saw no major upsets in the Green Cup division, although Chaos #2 (Jack Harris) and Chaos #25 (Jeremy Mirken) won their pool over Chaos #7 (Tuan Vu) and Gilles Demers of Montreal, QE.

Singles is where the surprises came today.  Renaud Fanoni defeated Luc Legault, both from Montreal, in a match that went the distance.  Francois Pelletier defeated Yves Archambault, also both from Montreal, in the quarterfinals.  Yves had match point in game 3 with the score 10-8 but could not convert.  Francois eventually prevailed 12-10.  We also have our first Frenchman in the semi-finals.  Congratulations to Greg Lima, from Paris, who defeated Gilles Demers, of Montreal, in a 3 game match to get the semifinals in the open singles category.

In mixed doubles The Machine, Jody Welch and Chaos #3 (PT Lovern), dispatched of their competition efficiently if not impressively to reach the final.  Jody’s setting was spot on as usual and PT put on a spiking clinic.  We only have 3 teams competing in mixed doubles but they put on a good show to wrap up day one - playing a round robin with the 2 best records advancing for the title match.  Lisa Monti Vu and JF Lemieux will face PT and Jody once again for the title after defeating Alexander Smirnov and Julia Tikhomirova in 2 games.

Tomorrow is day 2 and we’ll decide who goes to the show.  On tap is the round of 16 and quarter finals in doubles net, singles net thru the semi-finals, consolation singles, mixed doubles championship, and the freestyle finals.  We’ll also host a novice/pro match as the climax of net before the freestyle finals.

Last but not least, we played the novice division today and here are the result.  I’ll try to get the full names ASAP.  Congratulations to our new net players!

1. DC/ Gordon
2. Brian / Kim
3. Alex / Jeff Mudd
4. Abram Santana / Jeff Overbo

Forecast Is For Green Skies

It’s opening day at the 6th edition of The Green Cup!  We have upwards of 60 players in net and freestyle from across the US and including 2 players from Paris and 10 from the footbag net capital of the world - Montreal, Quebec.  We have 7 world champions in footbag net and 1 guest of honor.  His name is Jean-Francois Lemieux - we call him JF - and this weekend The Chaos Footbag club honors his lifelong dedication to the sport we love.  He is a doubles world champion, a 4 time runner up in both singles and doubles at the World Championships.  He also holds many major titles.  Oh, and btw - we’re very happy to welcome his doubles partner back to the game and to The Green Cup for the first time - Benjamin Rochon.

No team has yet claimed the Green Cup twice nor defended their title.  There will not be a repeat this year and we’ll miss Florian and Patrick who took the cup last year in the most dramatic doubles final this tournament has produced thus far.

Holders of the Green Cup years past include: 2004 - Alexis Deschenes / Brent Welch, 2005 - Chaos #3 (PT Lovern) / Chaos #4 (John Leys), 2006 - Emmanuel Bouchard / Chaos #8 (Patrick Schrickel), 2007 - Chaos #4 (John Leys) / Chaos #5 (Eric Wulff)

Holders Of The Green Cup present: Chaos #8 (Patrick Schrickel) / Florian Goetze.

It’s not all about competition though.  WTF - yes it is smile.  I’ll be back throughout the weekend with updates.  Happy Green Cup!!

Chaos love and best wishes to Patrick, Leah, and family on the passing of Leah’s father this week!  We’ll miss the Schrick Dog and his posse of supporters this weekend.
