Chaos - All In
After two days of competition in Helsinki, Finland, host city of the 2005 World Footbag Championships, preliminary rounds are complete and all entrants from Team Chaos advanced. Furthermore, each Chaos competitor held seed or moved up in the brackets.
Chaos #4 and #5, John Leys and Eric Wulff, both won their pools in open singles. John took his with relative ease perhaps a bead of perspiration inspired by Vince Bradley’s 9 points against him in game two of the sweep. Eric was not so fortunate, being pushed to three games in two of his three matches. The final match of #5’s pool was a tremendous battle and became the premier match on Sunday. Eric was dominated by Chris Loew, his German opponent, for the first game and a half loosing 511 and then falling behind 58 in the second. However, Eric found his stride just in time, pulling out game two at 118 followed by a 1210 overtime victory in game 3 to the delight of a raucous crowd.
26 of the 53 open singles players advanced to the single elimination round of competition with John maintaining the second seed and Eric the nine.
Chaos #9, Chris Ott, returned to singles competition for the first time in 15 years and #13, Jack Harris, participated in Singles also, this being his first ever World Championships. Both failed to advance to the second round.
Singles net competition continues on Wednesday.
As well as Team Chaos performed in singles, they upped the anti the following day for the first round of open doubles. Every doubles team with at least one Chaos member advanced to round two, with three of the four teams winning their pools. Chaos #3 and 4, PT Lovern and John Leys Defending World Champions, swept through their pool - not loosing a single game. Chaos #5 and his partner Chris Siebert, from the mighty Team NPR, followed suit by limiting their 4 opponents to no more than 7 points in any one game. Chaos #0 and #13, Patrick Keehan and Jack Harris, performed exceptionally well, holding their seed and advancing from pool play at their first ever WFC together. This is a particularly sweet result considering their disappointment in not advancing from pool play at The Green Cup just 2 months ago.
Also on Monday, Chaos represented in the premier match of the day once again when #9, Chris Ott, and his partner, ‘Underdog’ Corey Current, upset their pool captains, Finland A, winning game three in overtime 1210.
Doubles net continues on Thursday.
Other News:
Freestyle competition began today and the women are stronger than ever. Yes, you read correctly, and it may be the first time in the history of footbag that there are four woman clearly vying for the title. Five time defending World Champion, Carol Wedemeyer, Chaos 5.1 alpha, has her work cut out for her. At the time of this writing, round one of women’s single’s freestyle is complete but results are not yet tabulated and the competition is moving forward with open singles. Even though results are not posted, I am confident Carol will advance to the finals via her strong performance. However, it is not clear whether she will do so by taking 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in her pool. Anything but 1st in her pool would be a first in 7 years at the WFC.
Rumors are also flying that this may be Carol’s last year competing in freestyle. Any confirmation will be noted here!
Women’s open singles freestyle continues on Saturday afternoon.
Team USA is representing extremely well also. They are found across the field of courts proudly sporting the the new red, white, and blue USA uniforms. Along with Chaos members mentioned above, Corey Current, Chris Siebert, Tina Lewis, Steve Goldberg, Bruce Geuttich, and Peter Shunny are wearing the colors. All but Steve have advanced to round two.
Yves Archambault began his long awaited comeback playing in his first tournament in over a year due to various injuries. He advanced in both the open singles and doubles divisions.
