Quarterfinals For The Ages
All 4 quarterfinal singles matches were well played, having at least some drama, and were very entertaining. On top of that, they were staggered just enough so the fans could move from the finish of one match to the final game of another catching the climactic final set of all if they so chose.
The Fins have another representative in the Semi’s! Matti Pohjola, of Team Finland, defeated Florian Goetze, Team Deutschland, in a dramatic 3 set match (11-9 in the 3rd).
They had a glimpse at history too with Tuomas Karki taking Emmanuelle Bouchard to task in game 2 of their quarterfinal. Tuomas was unable to convert on a game point in the 2nd set and ultimately fell in strights sets with the score 10-12 in the 2nd.
JF Lemieux, of Montreal Quebec defeated Andy Wolff, of Frankfurt Deutschland, in 3 sets. All 3 games were dramatic and while JF took control in game 3 it was still closer than the score would indicat with JF prevailing 11-3.
Finally, John Leys, NYC USA and Chaos #4, was steady enough to close the book on Oskari Forsten’s Cinderella Story performance. Oskari made a furious comeback in the 3rd set after being down 8-2 only to fall short as John tightened up his defense to close out at 11-9.
So, the story of the event so far is still the Finns I think!!
Singles Semis:
#1 seed Emmanuelle Bouchard of Montreal Quebec VS #3 seed John Leys, Chaos #4, of NYC USA
#8 Matti Pojhola of Finland VS #6 seed Jean Francios Lemieux of Montral Quebec
Doubles quarters was pretty much the opposite. All matches went in straight sets with perhaps a little drama with Franky and Luc pushing the defending World Champions, Flo and Patrick Schrickel - Chaos #8, but Flo and Patti were able to come back after significant deficits in each of the first 2 sets to win the match in straight.
Gilles Demers and JF Lemieux were very much on top of their game and defeated John and Eric in straight sets. I think it was disappointing for all to see Chaos #4, John Leys, revisit a calf injury early in game 1. The chances for a good showing reduced significantly from that moment, and Gilles and JF took full advantage as they should continuing to play at the top of their game throughout.
Emmanuelle and PT, Chaos #3, dominated the Finnish Team of Tuomas and Jesse winning in straight sets.
Matti Pojhola and Oskari Forsten defeated the bronze metal team from last year, Jakko Inkennen and Jani Markkanen, in straight sets.
So - Doubles Semis
Matti and Oskari (Finland) VS PT and Manu
JF and Gilles of (Quebec) VS 2 time defending World Champions Patrick Chaos #8 Schrickel and Florian Goetze. Patrick now resides USA and Florian, of course, is from Frankfurt, Germany
