WFC 2006 - Day 5
We have been so lucky with no rain or wind but it has been really hot with average temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 Fahrenheit everyday. Some of the stories of the moment are these
Chaos is done.
Johns injury finally caught up with him in game 2 of the round of sweet 16 - in the form of a second injury. After Eric and John skunked Thomas and Yassin(Germany) 11 - 0, a beer please guys
, they escaped the game and the match with an 11-9 victory in game 2. However, at 52 of the second game John popped his right calf muscle, perhaps due to over-compensating for his left hamstring pull all week.
The reality of Johns condition was finally realized upon facing the no. 5 seed of the tournament in the quarter finals, Andy Ronald(UK) and Chris Seibert(USA). With Johns mobility extremely limited and his spiking ability lost, chances of victory for Chaos were slim. So, after perhaps dealing with some nerves in the first two sets of the match - Andy and Chris settled down and took it 11-6, 9-11, 11-1.
Still, a valiant effort I think from John and Eric, hey thats me
, as they had to play extremely well under dire conditions to make it into the elite 8.
Our other top story regarding Emmanuel Bouchard (Canada) and PT Lovern(USA: Chaos 3) is not a happy ending for Chaos, although their semi-final match will be remembered as one of the great ones. It was a classic knock down drag-em all out war in game 1 and 3 with both teams setting, spiking, digging, and in some cases blocking (CONAN!).
The crowd for the semi finals was amazing. The Germans really know how to celebrate as they had the wave going several times and they were orchestrating cheers for their favourite team as usual.
Congratulations to Andy Ronald(UK) and Chris Seibert(USA: NPR) for taking the match! Final score: [13-15, 15-7, 15-13].
In other Chaos news, Edwin Veltman wound up finishing in 27th position in doubles net. Thats a great result with this being his first WFC in about 4 years. Congratulations Edwin Veltman and his partner for this tourney - Yannik ‘keep them bees outa my beer’ Rockel!
Yes, I was sitting near this guy, Yannik that is, when he drank a bee and paid the price with a stinger in the tounque. Ouch!
Ok, Im off to the site to prepare for watching the final doubles match - German A, Patrick Schrickel and Florian Goetze VS Chris Seibert(USA) and Andy Ronald(UK). It should be a great match and the crowd will of course heavily favour their home team. World Cup of Footbag is in Germany too.
