Out Of Retirment?
Not just yet. At least not according to Shults. The team of Randy Mulder and Kenny Shults were on the court again after a 9 year hiatus. Uniforms required? They played in matching Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts. When asked about the unusual attire Shults replied, “This is what retired people wear. We’ll come out of retirement tomorrow. Youll see. We’ve got a plan for each day of the event.” So, Kenny and Randy returned to the court today and didn’t disappoint anyone except their opponents. Casual attire or not. It is surely the lowest they’ve ever been seeded, 5th, but what do you do when the winningest team in the history of the game shows up after 9 years off. Needless to say perhaps - they advanced from their pool in straight sets.
Day one ...
32 Singles players and 22 Open doubles teams. We shattered all records for attendance and can’t thank enough those who traveled half way around the world to be here competing and enjoying the weekend with us.
Sebastien Verdi is here and playing too. He is competing on the court for the first time in several years and we thank him for that. He stepped up to play with Luc Legault when his partner Frank Peltier had to withdraw suffering from back spasms.
BTW - Frank was released from the hospital after a brief visit to treat the spasms. He should be doing fine. So, that is good news. All the best to Frank from Chaos and the entire Green Cup crew!
Greg Lima hit the singles scene hard taking J4 to 10-10 in game 3 before succumbing 10-12. Martin Cote was not so kind coming back to upset the John in game 3 - 12-10. What kind of way is that for an honored guest to be treating his hosts. Sheesh!
There were no major upsets in Doubles net as the top seeds in each of 7 pools won. Winning their pools…
Flo/Patti, Eric/John, Manu/PT, Alexis/Bob, Kenny/Randy, Martin/Gilles, Yves/Ulli.
Freestyle? We’ve got it and David Clavens is here - the 4th ranked player in the world. I have no news on freestyle yet except that David Clavens won his pool today. Thanks to Steve Goldberg, Emily Kulcyk, and Red Husted for making freestyle happen!
Tomorrow are the singles consolation, singles semis, doubles round of 16 and quarters, and mixed doubles semi finals. What will Shults and Mulder have in store for us tomorrow? Are they bringing back the wardrobe wars?
